Crowd on the Bowery, Coney Island, NY, 1903

About this postcard

A dense crowd of excursionists, many in straw boaters and summer suits, fills the Bowery at Coney Island. The Bowery was Coney Island's own promenade, distinct from the Manhattan street of the same name, and it served as the main artery of the amusement district. Signs for "Lubin's" and "Griffins" and a bathing advertisement rise above the throng. In the early 1900s the Bowery was lined with hotels, bathhouses, saloons, and concession stands, and Coney Island drew huge weekend crowds by steamer and trolley. A small comic figure with an American flag and the words "Greetings from Picturesque America" appears at the upper left.
