Cuban country landscape with bohío huts and cattle, near Havana, Cuba, circa 1940

About this postcard

A rural Cuban scene near Havana: a low thatched-roof bohío with palm-trunk walls sits at the right, while cattle graze and rest on a grassy hillside in the foreground, with palms, brush and rolling hills beyond. The bohío is the traditional Cuban peasant dwelling, built of royal-palm wood and a palm-thatch roof, and such huts were a standard picturesque subject on Cuban view cards of the early 20th century. The bilingual caption and linen texture point to a mid-century tourist card aimed at both Spanish- and English-speaking visitors.
