About this postcard
A column of cadets in light blue uniforms and caps rides dark horses across a green parade ground, led by a rider carrying a tall white guidon. Behind them rise the red brick, crenellated barracks of Culver Military Academy. The card identifies the unit as the Culver Black Horse Troop, a mounted drill organization at the academy, which was founded in 1894 on the shore of Lake Maxinkuckee in northern Indiana. Formed in the early 1900s, the troop became one of the school's best-known ceremonial units and has ridden in presidential inaugural parades. By the early 1940s, horse drill persisted at Culver even as the U.S. Army moved toward mechanized forces.
