A gnarled cypress with several leaning trunks and a dense, wind-flattened crown stands on the sand at Carmel-by-the-Sea. Its dark foliage and twisted silhouette fill the frame against a pale sky.
The tree's wind-trained shape is typical of Monterey cypress along the central California coast. By the early 1900s Carmel's beach and its weather-beaten trees were familiar subjects for the artists and photographers drawn to the village.
