About this postcard
A view of the Dallas County Court House, a heavy Romanesque Revival block of rough red sandstone with a tall central clock tower and clustered corner turrets, rising above the low commercial buildings of downtown Dallas. The county built it in the early 1890s from designs by the local firm Orlopp & Kusener, and it was still a young building when cards like this one were sold. Dallas knew it as "Old Red"; it served the county for generations and remains a downtown landmark. The courthouse square sat at the center of a fast-growing cotton and railroad city, and the tower made an easy landmark for visitors sending word home.
