Dam and spillway in winter, Colfax, WA, circa 1918
- Card type
- Real photo
About this postcard
A snow-covered slope falls to a long dam or spillway, water running over the crest and freezing into ice below. Evergreen trees stand scattered on the hillside behind, and a dark stream moves through the foreground. The view carries no caption or postmark, so the site itself is unidentified. The card was addressed to Mrs. R. E. Mufford at Colfax, Washington. Small dams of this kind commonly served a gristmill, sawmill, or local power plant, and winter views of them were a familiar subject for the real-photo photographers whose cards circulated widely in the 1910s and 1920s.
