Daniel Boone Coming Through Cumberland Gap, City Art Museum, St. Louis, circa 1915

About this postcard

The image reproduces George Caleb Bingham's painting of Daniel Boone leading a party of settlers through the Cumberland Gap. A woman on a white horse sits at the center of the group, surrounded by men with rifles, a dog, and pack animals; bare cliffs and dead trees frame the rocky pass under a cloudy sky. Bingham, a Missouri painter, made the image in the mid-nineteenth century as a scene of westward migration. The Cumberland Gap was a key route through the Appalachian Mountains into Kentucky, and Boone's name had long been tied to that passage. The painting was on loan from Washington University to the City Art Museum in St. Louis.
