Deadwood, South Dakota as in 1876, street scene, circa 1948

About this postcard

The view reconstructs Deadwood, South Dakota, as it looked in 1876: a wide dirt main street crowded with horse-drawn wagons, log piles, and figures in frontier dress, lined with false-front wooden storefronts bearing signs for Hermann Treber Wholesale Liquor Dealers, a bank, a dentist, and a shingle dealer. Deadwood grew out of the Black Hills gold rush of 1876, and mining in the region remained active, with ore reduced at Deadwood. The town's annual 'Days of '76' celebration combines a rodeo with Gold Rush scenes each August, and summer stagings of the 'Trial of Jack McCall for the murder of Wild Bill Hickok' recall the town's frontier past. Mt. Moriah Cemetery, on the hill above town, holds the graves of Hickok, Calamity Jane, Preacher Smith, and Potato Creek Johnny.
