About this postcard
A figure in a wide-brimmed hat, white shirt and red tie — the prospector and showman Walter E. Scott, known as "Death Valley Scotty" — stands at left before a desert valley, with the Spanish Colonial Revival mansion he built in Grapevine Canyon shown in the middle distance among palms and scrub, backed by barren, brightly colored hills. The card names the site as Scotty's Castle in Death Valley National Monument. Begun in the 1920s with funds from Chicago insurance magnate Albert Musgrove, the compound became a popular tourist stop on the Death Valley loop road and was later incorporated into Death Valley National Park.
