Death Valley Scotty's Castle, Death Valley, CA, circa 1930

About this postcard

Black-and-white view of Death Valley Scotty's Castle, a Spanish Colonial Revival mansion with a tall tower on the left, set among palms and desert scrub in a canyon of barren hills. A curving road and outbuildings surround the main house. The complex in Grapevine Canyon was the winter home of Chicago insurance executive Albert Johnson, who built it in the 1920s. Its name comes from Walter Scott, the prospector and storyteller known as Death Valley Scotty; the house belonged to Johnson. The tower and palms set the retreat apart in the desert of eastern California.
