Death Valley Scotty's room in his castle, Death Valley, CA, circa 1930

Card type
Real photo

About this postcard

The photograph shows Death Valley Scotty's room inside his castle, with a bed covered by a patterned quilt, heavy carved wooden furniture, a large armoire, a round table, and framed portraits and pictures on the walls. The room reads as a comfortable retreat rather than a prospector's shack, mixing rustic furniture with formal portraits. The castle is the Spanish-style mansion in northern Death Valley built in the 1920s for Chicago insurance executive Albert Johnson. Walter Scott, the prospector and storyteller known as Death Valley Scotty, lived there and became the main draw for visitors to the remote ranch.
