Deep Sea Jumbo Crab, Oregon Coast Highway, circa 1940

About this postcard

A large crab — the card calls it a "Deep Sea Jumbo Crab" — is shown from the front against a plain blue water background, its long legs and heavy claws spread wide, resting on what appears to be a dark piling or dock timber. The card was issued as a souvenir of the Oregon Coast Highway, the scenic coastal route (later part of U.S. 101) that runs the length of Oregon's shoreline and was a popular motor-touring subject in the 1930s and 1940s. The species shown resembles the Dungeness crab, the commercially important crab of the Pacific Northwest coast.
