About this postcard
A large Second Empire-style government office building with a mansard roof, dormers and tall chimneys, seen from the street behind an iron fence and low stone wall, with an American flag flying from the roof. The caption names it the Department of State; the building is the old State, War and Navy Building (now the Eisenhower Executive Office Building) next to the White House, designed by Alfred B. Mullett and completed in 1888. The State Department occupied it until moving to Foggy Bottom in the late 1940s, which dates this view to roughly that era.
