About this postcard
The card shows the massive granite office building labeled "Department of State, Washington, D.C.," an American flag flying from its roof and a iron fence and lawn in the foreground. Completed in 1888 to designs by Alfred B. Mullett in the French Second Empire style, it originally housed the State, War and Navy Departments and was long nicknamed the Old Executive Office Building; it is now the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, next to the White House. The linen-era coloring and the caption reflect the period when the State Department still occupied the structure, before its move to Foggy Bottom in the late 1940s.
