The scene shows Devil's Pool in Wissahickon Creek, a rocky, wooded ravine in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. A path runs near the pool, and a stone arch bridge and a wooden footbridge span the gorge above the water, which churns through the rocks below. Local lore held that the small, deep pool was continually frothing and seething, and children believed it was bottomless. The Wissahickon Valley was a popular scenic corner of Fairmount Park, and Devil's Pool was one of its named landmarks.
