The scene shows Devil's Pool in Wissahickon Creek, a rocky, wooded ravine in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. A stone arch bridge and a wooden footbridge span the gorge above the water, which churns through the rocks below. Local lore described the pool as small and deep, continually frothing and seething, and children believed it was bottomless. The Wissahickon Valley was a popular scenic corner of Fairmount Park, and Devil's Pool was one of its named landmarks.
