About this postcard
A tall, fluted rock monolith rises above a dense band of green and autumn-tinted trees under a blue sky streaked with pink at the horizon. The tower's exposed columns give it a stump-like profile, and the caption notes that the treetops lie 800 feet below its crown. The card's printed legend recounts a Plains Indian story: two children playing on the plains were chased by a bear, prayed, and the Great Spirit raised the ground beneath them into the tower; the fluted sides are the bear's claw marks. Devil's Tower stands in northeastern Wyoming, west of Spearfish, South Dakota, near the Black Hills. It was proclaimed the first national monument in 1906 and is sacred to several Plains tribes.
