About this postcard

A view down Dexter Avenue in Montgomery, Alabama, with two streetcars approaching along the tracks, horse-drawn wagons at the curbs, and pedestrians in early-1900s dress crossing the wide unpaved roadway. The commercial blocks lining the street carry signs for John I. Cobbs & Co., the Aetna Fire Insurance agency of E. H. E. Warren, and a hotel; the dome and spire of the Alabama State Capitol close the vista at the head of the avenue. Dexter Avenue was Montgomery's principal business street and the ceremonial route running from the commercial district up to the Capitol.
