About this postcard
The dining room of George Washington's mansion at Mount Vernon, Virginia, with its long polished table, carved chairs, and an elaborately carved fireplace surround. Glass candelabra sit on a tray at the center of the table. The room belongs to the mansion's restored 18th-century interior, furnished to the years when Washington lived there and received guests. Mount Vernon was rescued by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, founded in 1853 as the country's first national historic preservation organization. The association bought the house and grounds, opened them to visitors, and still maintains the home and tomb of Washington.
