About this postcard
The dining room at Scotty's Castle holds a long wooden table and chairs beneath an ornate carved wood ceiling. Built-in shelves along the walls are filled with ceramic dishes and glassware, and a doorway opens to a curtained alcove. Patterned floor tiles and a large rug cover the floor. Scotty's Castle, also called Death Valley Ranch, was built in the 1920s as a desert retreat for Chicago insurance executive Albert Johnson and prospector Walter Scott, better known as Death Valley Scotty. The room's heavy woodwork and display of tableware fit the house's role as an isolated but comfortably furnished ranch in Grapevine Canyon.
