About this postcard

Dodge's Mill in Rowley, Massachusetts: a long, low, open-sided mill building with a broad gabled roof at the edge of the woods, its yard stacked with sawn planks at left and heaped with long raw logs in the foreground. Rowley is one of the older farming towns of Essex County, and its streams powered saw and grist mills from the colonial period onward, so a mill like this one turned the surrounding woodlots into lumber and board for local building. Small country sawmills of the kind were seasonal operations, worked when logs and water were available and the farm work slack.
