About this postcard

The carved stone doorway of Mission San José in San Antonio, Texas, its baroque facade layered with relief figures and ornament around a wooden double door. A figure in a blue robe stands at the left of the frame. Founded in 1720 as Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, the complex was the largest of the Spanish colonial missions strung along the San Antonio River. Its stone church, completed in the 1780s, is known for the carved Rose Window and for the ornate portal shown here, among the finest surviving examples of Spanish colonial stonework in Texas.
