The view looks out from the mouth of Reynards Cave over Dovedale, a limestone gorge in the Peak District. Wooded slopes fall steeply on both sides, with a rocky limestone face on the right and a green hillside dropping away to the left. A pale, lightly clouded sky shows between the two wooded flanks of the dale. By the early 1900s Dovedale was a popular walking destination, known for its crags, caves, and river scenery.
