The downstream face of Hoover (Boulder) Dam rises between the dark walls of Black Canyon. Water pours from outlet works set high in the canyon wall, a fall the caption calls "higher than Niagara," while the powerhouse sits at the base. In the foreground, a diversion tunnel outlet opens toward the river. The dam was built on the Colorado River in the early 1930s; for much of that decade it was officially called Boulder Dam, though the Hoover name persisted.
