About this postcard
A large, rambling red-brick and shingle country house with multiple gables, tall chimneys and a broad veranda, seen across an expanse of lawn where a woman and two small children stand; the card names it as Dr. Webb's residence at Shelburne Farms, Vermont. Shelburne Farms was the model estate assembled from the 1880s by Dr. William Seward Webb, a physician and railroad executive, and his wife Lila Vanderbilt Webb, on the shore of Lake Champlain south of Burlington. The property became known for its progressive breeding of livestock and its landscaped grounds laid out with the help of Frederick Law Olmsted, and it is now a National Historic Landmark.
