About this postcard
A view into the dark, cave-like recess of Dragon's Mouth Spring, where water surges against the rock wall and sends up spray and steam; the surrounding sinter-covered slope is tinted in ochres and greens, with a fallen, root-like branch lying in the foreground pool. The spring, in the Mud Volcano area of Yellowstone National Park, was named for the thumping, roaring sound of its wave action inside the cavern, which early visitors likened to a dragon's breathing. The card was published by the Haynes studio, long the park's official concession photographer.
