About this postcard
A mannequin stands in a shallow exhibit alcove wearing a dark velvet gown with a black lace bertha collar and a blue fan held at the waist, identified by the printed caption as the dress of Mary Todd Lincoln. Mary Todd Lincoln (1818–1882), wife of Abraham Lincoln, was First Lady during the Civil War and was known for her elaborate, costly wardrobe, a subject of considerable public comment at the time. The card was issued to illustrate a costume in the collections of the United States National Museum, the predecessor of today's Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
