About this postcard
The photograph shows a dense crowd of men, most in hats, packed into a Goldfield street around a raised wooden platform. A speaker stands on the platform while storefront signs for MOHAWK and EXCHANGE rise behind the crowd. The printed caption identifies the event as a drilling contest held on Labor Day. Goldfield was a gold-mining boomtown in the early 1900s, and Labor Day drilling contests were a common mining-town event. Miners tested their skill driving steel into rock with hammers, and contests drew spectators into the business district.
