Driving a Hard Bargain, woman and two men bargaining over a pig, circa 1910

About this postcard

A comic genre scene titled "Driving a Hard Bargain": a woman in a red shawl, white apron and bonnet stands in a stone cottage doorway holding a stick, while two men in dark coats and bowler-style hats face her from a fenced yard, a pig at their feet. Such humorous rural vignettes were a staple of early twentieth-century picture postcards, often derived from painted or photographic studio tableaux and sold as greetings rather than as views of a specific place.
