About this postcard
Looking down over rooftops and yards, the view opens onto Duluth Harbor, a broad sheet of water lined with long ore docks and warehouses. A steel transporter bridge spans the ship channel in the distance. The structure is the Aerial Bridge, completed in 1905 as a traveling gondola suspended from a truss; it carried people and vehicles across the Duluth Ship Canal and was rebuilt as a vertical-lift bridge in 1930. The harbor, nine miles long and two miles wide and entered by two canals, was a busy Great Lakes port. Its docks loaded iron ore from the Mesabi Range into lake freighters, and the caption calls it one of the most important commercial places in the world.
