An elevated view looks down on the DuPont Rayon Company works at Old Hickory, Tennessee, where long parallel rows of dark drying racks or sheds and several tall smokestacks spread through wooded hills. White multi-story buildings stand at the edges of the complex. Old Hickory was a planned company town built by DuPont during World War I for a smokeless powder plant on the Cumberland River. The company later operated a rayon plant there, and the town remained an industrial community tied to the works.
