About this postcard
The view looks across the Mississippi River toward the triple-arch steel span of the Eads Bridge, with a packet steamboat and a sternwheel towboat moored at the levee in front of low brick wharf buildings. Completed in 1874 to James B. Eads's design, the bridge was the first major crossing of the Mississippi at St. Louis and, at the time, the longest arch bridge in the world; its deep pneumatic caissons were a pioneering feat of foundation engineering. The busy levee below reflects St. Louis's role as a great river port in the steamboat era.
