East Rock, a traprock ridge, rises above the New Haven plain, its summit marked by the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument and a small red-roofed structure. A broad tidal flat and channel of water, edged with marsh and snow-patched ground, fill the foreground.
The sender writes of "doing your city to-day, helping to chaperone a party of high school girls." The summit monument honors New Haven's Civil War soldiers and sailors, and the ridge and its park were a familiar destination for city outings in the early 1900s.
