About this postcard

View across the East Room of the White House, looking toward a doorway crowned by the presidential seal, with tall fluted columns, cut-glass chandeliers, gilt torchères, potted palms and a red carpet over a patterned parquet floor. The East Room is the largest room in the Executive Mansion, used for receptions, ceremonies and entertainments since the building was occupied in 1800. Its present neoclassical appearance, with the great crystal chandeliers and white-and-gold scheme, dates largely from the 1902 McKim restoration and the 1952 Truman reconstruction.
