The main building of the Eastern Illinois State Normal School stands behind a lawn and curving drive, a long brick range with a tall central tower, corner turrets, and crenellated parapets. The school opened at Charleston in 1895 to train teachers and later became Eastern Illinois University. The sender, a student writing from Pemberton Hall, reports more than 700 students at the school. The towered building was the campus's defining structure in the early 20th century.
