The view looks across the broad Eastern Wide Waters near Rochester, with a low bridge or embankment crossing the water and scattered houses and trees along the far shore. Farm fields and a curving road fill the foreground. The Eastern Wide Waters was the widened section of the Erie Canal east of the city, a broad channel that made room for canal boats and gave the outskirts an open, watery landscape in the early twentieth century.
