About this postcard

Elizabeth Mead Hall, a large brick dormitory with a steep gabled roof, tall chimneys, and rows of sash windows, stands at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. The writer, Angie Crawford Hartz, calls it "the next to the largest of our dormitories" and notes that some freshmen were not on campus. That detail points to Mount Holyoke's residential model, in which students lived and studied on campus. Founded in 1837 by Mary Lyon, the college is the oldest continuing institution of higher education for women in the United States.

Dec. 2, 1905 Dear Charlotte, Haven't I been a long time writ- ing you this postal? I think that my trife home must have brought me to my senses. This is the next to the largest of our dormitories. We have room and need more, as a number of the freshmen are not on the campus. Angie Crawford Hartz.
