Two bull elk lie bedded in deep snow on an open flat while two figures on skis stand nearby, a dark conifer forest and pink-tinged winter sky behind them. The card's own caption places the scene in Hayden Valley, a broad thermal basin in the center of Yellowstone National Park long noted as prime winter range and viewing ground for the park's elk herds. The photograph is credited to Haynes, the family firm of F. Jay Haynes that served as official photographer to Yellowstone for decades.
