Elk stalled in snow, Hayden Valley, Yellowstone, WY, circa 1935

About this postcard

Two bull elk lie bedded in deep snow on an open flat in Hayden Valley, with two figures on skis standing nearby. Dark conifers and a pink-tinged winter sky fill the background. Hayden Valley is a broad thermal basin in the center of Yellowstone National Park and a well-known winter range and viewing ground for the park's elk. The card's printed text puts the latest official estimate at nearly 20,000 elk, or wapiti, in the park and notes that they are seen throughout the park at all seasons. The image is credited to Haynes, the family firm of F. Jay Haynes, which served as official photographer to Yellowstone for decades.
