A high vantage point above Ensor Valley near Cookeville, Tennessee, looks down over rolling wooded hills and patchwork pasture, with a small pond or stream at left and a cluster of red farm buildings along a road at right. The view is the sort travelers saw from U.S. Route 70, the main east-west highway across the Cumberland Plateau before the interstate era. Cookeville, the seat of Putnam County, sits in this upland farming region of Middle Tennessee.
