About this postcard

A dirt road runs between the massive trunks of a redwood grove, with sunlight falling through the high canopy onto the shaded ground on either side. The view is framed to make the scale of the trees the point, the road narrowing into the stand of timber ahead. The Big Tree Grove in the Santa Cruz Mountains was a well-known tourist stop by the time this card was made. Excursionists reached the redwoods by rail from San Francisco and Santa Cruz, and the groves were promoted as a scenic wonder of the coast range, which helps explain why a view like this was printed and sold as a souvenir.
