The gateway to Fort McPherson: stone piers topped with ornamental lamps flank a broad drive, with soldiers in uniform standing about, a sentry posted in the roadway, a dog at the right, and the American flag flying above the post buildings and trees beyond. Fort McPherson was established in 1885 on ground south of Atlanta and named for Major General James B. McPherson, killed in the 1864 Atlanta campaign. The message on the back is ordinary news between friends, a report of good health and of going to school.
