About this postcard

The entrance to Fort McPherson in Atlanta: stone piers with ornamental lamps flank a broad drive, soldiers in uniform stand about, a sentry is posted in the roadway, a dog stands at the right, and the American flag flies above the post buildings and trees beyond. Fort McPherson was established in 1885 on ground south of Atlanta and named for Major General James B. McPherson, killed in the 1864 Atlanta campaign. The post was a longtime Army installation on the city's south side.
