About this postcard
The card shows the gateway to Fort McPherson: stone piers topped with ornamental lamps flank a broad drive, with soldiers in uniform standing about, a sentry posted in the roadway, a dog at the right, and the American flag flying above the post buildings and trees beyond. Fort McPherson was established in 1885 as a U.S. Army post south of Atlanta and named for Major General James B. McPherson, killed in the 1864 Atlanta campaign; during the First World War it served as an officer training and induction camp. The scene captures the post's peacetime gate detail typical of the 1910s.
