About this postcard
The entrance grounds of Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, center on a pond with a small wooded island. A tall obelisk monument rises among the trees, and winding paths carry several figures in period dress through the grounds. Frame houses and a fence line mark the edge of the cemetery landscape. Hollywood Cemetery was laid out in the rural cemetery tradition, with rolling ground and river views that made it a landscaped place for burial and visitation. In the early 20th century, such park-like cemeteries were popular settings for quiet outings and scenic postcard views.
