About this postcard

Open iron gates between white stone piers frame the drive into Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where a monument statue of a figure with a raised arm stands on a pedestal at the end of the avenue. Tall trees line the grounds, and a small gatehouse building sits at the right. Mt. Olivet was laid out south of downtown Frederick in the 1850s in the rural cemetery style, with winding drives and landscaped lawns rather than a crowded churchyard. It is the burial place of Francis Scott Key, whose grave made the cemetery a stop for visitors, and the card's publisher, working from Frederick, photographed and printed local views of just this kind for the souvenir trade.
