The picture shows a doorway cut into the base of an enormous coast redwood stump, with a hand-lettered sign mounted above the opening that tallies the tree's diameter, bark thickness and the lumber it yielded. The caption identifies it as the entrance to the Stump House at Eureka, California, one of the roadside attractions built into the giant redwoods of Humboldt County. Such stump and tree-house novelties drew motor tourists traveling the Redwood Highway in the early twentieth century.
