Entrance to the Stump House, Eureka, California, circa 1943

About this postcard

The view shows the entrance to the Stump House, a doorway cut into the base of an enormous coast redwood stump in Eureka, California. A hand-lettered sign above the opening records the tree's diameter, bark thickness, and the lumber it yielded. The printed caption identifies the place as a business selling redwood burl gifts and novelties and notes that it kept a complete stock on hand. The Stump House was one of the Humboldt County roadside stops that turned the region's giant redwoods into tourist commerce, drawing motorists along the Redwood Highway in the 1930s and 1940s.
