About this postcard

A panoramic color view of the Erie Canal aqueduct crossing the Genesee River at Rochester, New York, with its stone arches spanning the water and brick commercial blocks and mills lining both banks. The Rochester Aqueduct carried canal boats over the Genesee; the stone structure shown here replaced the original 1820s aqueduct and was itself superseded by the Broad Street Bridge in the 1920s. The Erie Canal, opened in 1825, linked the Great Lakes with the Hudson River and made Rochester one of the busiest flour-milling cities in the country.
