The Essex House rises above a dense band of trees on Central Park South, its cream-colored Art Deco tower stepped back in tiers and topped with a decorative crown. Dark and tan buildings frame it against a blue sky. The 44-story hotel opened in 1931 and became a recognizable part of the Central Park South skyline. Its caption markets it as "An address of distinction, overlooking beautiful Central Park" and as the home of the Casino-on-the-Park, a name that signaled dining and entertainment at the park's edge.
